Brexit: What UK nationals in Slovakia need to know.

The UK is scheduled to leave the EU on October 31, 2019. Here's how the UK's departure will affect UK nationals living in Slovakia. In order to address Brexit-related concerns, the British Embassy of Slovakia hosted another informational Brexit session for all UK nationals on October 22, 2019 at the Carlton Hotel. A previous informational session was hosted on April 9.

British Ambassador to Slovakia Andy Garth and other members of the British Embassy were in attendance. They were accompanied by members of the Foreign Ministry and the Foreigners' Police.

The UK is scheduled to depart the EU on October 31, 2019. However, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has formally requested an extension on Brexit proceedings until January 31, 2020, as he is legally required to do so. If the UK is not granted the extension and has not approved a withdrawal agreement before October 31, 2019, the UK will proceed with a no-deal Brexit.

Here is what UK nationals living in Slovakia can expect in the event of a deal or no-deal Brexit on October 31, 2019.Residency in SlovakiaPost-Brexit agreements with Slovakia are based on reciprocity. The current rights of UK nationals will be protected in Slovakia as long as Slovaks living in the UK are granted the same protection.

All UK nationals with permanent residence in Slovakia at the time of the UK's departure from the EU will maintain their status. However, they must apply for and receive a new residence card by December 31, 2020. UK nationals are recommended to apply for new cards as soon as possible.

UK nationals who do not register with the Foreigner's Police and receive a residence card before the UK's departure from the EU will be considered third-country nationals. If you wish to stay in Slovakia for longer than 90 days, you must apply for temporary or permanent residence as a third-country national.

UK nationals and their family members without registered residence in Slovakia on the date of the UK's departure from the EU may leave Slovakia under the same conditions as they entered the Slovak Republic no later than 90 days after the United Kingdom's...
